This picture represents a method of war propaganda used by the American Government during World War II. It was used as encouragement to the disheartened US citizens who feared for their husbands and sons fighting in a brutal, seemingly endless war. It depicts the character known as "Uncle Sam" whom the US Government used as a manifestation of the jingoistic American spirit. They used him in other campaigns to rouse young men to battle in order to save the country they were raised to love. This poster, however, shows Uncle Sam injured from the ceaseless battles but encourages the American people to not lose faith and to keep supporting their government and men at war. Their beloved Uncle Sam, though wounded, refuses to surrender to their enemies, inappropriately labeled "Japs" in an attempt to show that the government will not back down and will defeat those who had caused them harm.
